In Wisdom & Order “This book includes some of President Packer’s most significant messages, delivered over a span of twenty-five years, on such topics as the plan of salvation, listening to the voice of the Spirit, spiritual growth, and marriage and family.    “Typical of his unwavering style, he tackles some of the challenges the world faces in the 21st century, such as the disease of profanity and the need for personal responsibility.” (Nonfiction book by Boyd K. Packer)
Searching for Ropens and Finding God “Three American Christians—one middle-aged LDS- Mormon high priest and two younger Protestant Young Earth Creationists—explored parts of Umboi Island in two separate expeditions in 2004, interviewing native eyewitnesses of the elusive ropen. They returned home even more convinced that long-tailed pterosaurs live, even thrive, in Papua New Guinea.” (from the title page of this nonfiction book)
By LDS Author Jonathan Whitcomb I’ve encountered a number of critics, over the past thirteen years, skeptics who ridicule those who’ve written about eyewitness accounts of large flying creatures with no feathers: apparent pterosaurs. I’m the most prolific of the nonfiction writers, having self-published four books in a total of nine editions, as well as one peer-reviewed scientific paper and over a thousand blog posts and web pages about these flying creatures. Assuming my associates and I are correct, that a limited number of species of “pterodactyls” never became extinct, how does that relate to Mormon doctrine, LDS beliefs? In reality, there is no simple, direct relationship between those flying creatures and the gospel of Jesus Christ. The atonement of the Savior is at the center of his restored gospel. His perfect life and example, his voluntary giving of his life, and his resurrection— all of these are at the heart of LDS doctrine, as is the restoration through his prophet Joseph Smith.
So why have I spent over 10,000 hours investigating eyewitness sighting reports and analyzing relation- ships between them and searching for the animals myself, later writing and rewriting what I’ve learned about these flying creatures? It’s not for money, for my expenses have exceeded my profits from book sales. It’s for those persons who may be touched by something I write and come to listen to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit. That soft whispering of the Spirit of God leads people to Christ. Without that basic purpose, I would have given up on my investigation long ago. Because God has given me a deep joy in life, I want others to share that joy. To receive it, we need to come to Christ. How can living pterosaurs help humans to receive the light of the Savior? They may help some persons to recognize the limitations of naturalism philosophy  and embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ. I do not imply that any simple one-step process will be involved, but some persons will see modern pterosaurs as a sign that popular secular ideas need to be reexamined.
How do Modern Pterosaurs Relate to LDS Doctrine?
The Progress of Science
This sketch, by the eyewitness Eskin Kuhn, was drawn within minutes of the sighting. (daylight, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 1971)
More from Whitcomb A secondary goal relates to scientific progress. In recent years, many Americans and other Westerners seem to have adopted a new definition of science, thinking it must be a vast collection of statements of fact. A constant indoctrina- tion from Western media has contributed to this distortion. I suggest we look at the older definitions, including the following: “[Science is] the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.” Substituting the new idea about the nature of science has caused some persons, even those labeled scientists, to go to the extreme of discarding all dating of dinosaur fossils (using C-14 dating) that results in some measurable amount of carbon-14 being found in fossils. In addition, sightings of obvious living pterosaurs—those have been dismissed, even though persons from around the world have reported the animals.
